James Edward Davis
This photo was taken in 1981 when Jim executed his Eagle Scout project which was to clean up the Dennis Hill Cemetery. This cemetery is the oldest one in Palermo, ME and the oldest settler of Palermo is buried there. The project entailed clearing the property, filling in grave depressions and setting stones which had broken or fallen over. Jim had no ancestors in this cemetery.

JONATHAN GEORGE BENFER, log cabin
JONATHAN GEORGE BENFER, who is the founder of the BENFER family (in the United States) on which one of my lineages is derived, arrived in the United States in January 1767 from Rotterdam, Germany on the ship “Betsy.” He and his wife built a log cabin, which still stands.

The family became thickly scattered over the fertile hills and valleys of Snyder County, Pennsylvania, USA.

In 1918, Neva taught in this one room schoolhouse. Her father said that he would help to pay toward her buying a horse if she earned the rest. She taught here for one year and then went to Washington, D.C. to work to make the rest of the money. She stayed in D.C. until 1969 and never did buy the horse.
